Purpose
The practice exists to improve the quality of governance and the effectiveness of institutions by developing professional, ethical and outcome-oriented methods of work. This purpose is recorded in the statutes of the company and is reported on annually.
It carries a practical consequence. We measure our work by whether a client’s decisions become better founded, their structures clearer, and their institutional practice more durable after an engagement than before it. Where an engagement would not produce that, we say so rather than proceed.
Independence
Independence is a condition of the work, not a statement of values. It holds because the practice is structured so that it can hold: we take no position on behalf of a client in a political or advocacy context, conduct no lobbying, campaigning or fundraising, hold no commercial interest in the outcomes we recommend, and receive no consideration from any third party in connection with a recommendation.
We decline mandates where these conditions cannot be maintained. That selection mechanism is what makes the independence real, and it is applied before an engagement begins rather than defended afterwards.
The founder
The practice was founded by a governance and institutional strategy practitioner with over eleven years of experience advising organisations operating in complex political, institutional and humanitarian environments across the Middle East, North Africa and Europe.
That work has included strategic advisory support to public institutions, international organisations, civil society actors and other institutional stakeholders, on governance, institutional development, accountability, humanitarian coordination and organisational reform. It is the source of the methodologies and decision-support frameworks the practice applies today.
